The Mask

Exploring colour and texture to discover surprising outcomes.

Form & Colour

During my time with Iris Toonen and Floris Hovers, I learned to appreciate the subtle power of colour, proportion, texture and form. Over the course of the trimester, the class became a lab for colour theory and material research.

The main assignment was to create a headpiece out of cardboard, paper and textile that reflected the combined elements of a toy and a plant. The purpose of this was to increase sensitivity to the materiality, or the “skin” of an object, and explore possible connections between the manufactured and the organic.

The final project was presented as part of my end term exhibition.

Floris Hovers & Iris Toonen, DAE Lecturers

“We enjoyed your happy, dedicated, involved and studious attitude. With this we believe you learned a lot in this class. Your work is expressive with a good working energy. Don’t forget to take time, build in moments of rest to reflect your work. Step back, take distance during your work. See the overall picture. Keep up your positive and helpful attitude in class.
