The Whistleblower

A collaborative project with Noam Hasak-Lowy exploring sound and mechanisms.

Sound & Mechanisms

During the first trimester at DAE, each Monday was dedicated to experimenting with sound and exploring the possibilities of basic mechanisms. The final assignment was to produce a music box, a working automata that produced two sounds by the turning of a crank shaft.

In collaboration with Noam Hasak-Lowy we created The Whistleblower, a sound automata that plays two distinct notes from handmade whistles, activated by air from two bellows pushed by the arms of a crank shaft.

The final project was presented as part of my end term exhibition.

The Process

More important than the final outcome was the process of trial and error. See the progress of the project below.

Allard Roeterink, DAE Lecturer

“You kicked off the trimester by creating a string instrument with plastic ears. This showed great enthusiasm and ambitious ideas which you had to bring down to fit the limitations of the last assignment. Your process was full of trials and explorations. Along the journey, you faced a lot of errors that never stopped you from progressing. We saw you each time more determined to overcome the challenges you were facing. We applaud you for that attitude! You have indeed learned that stuff doesn't work as planned. Not at first at least. And that's a great lesson. Finally, you managed to create a sounding automata which wasn’t an easy task and you and Noam worked very well together to overcome all the challenges. Noam dove into the realm of bellows and you became the whistle queen. Congrats! That's also a skill for life. Our advice for you is to pay attention to documenting your process. This would help you understand the way you work and improve.”
